Stoma types
There are so many stoma types out there that physicians have found it hard to correctly categorize them all. However, there is one criterion that everyone agrees on: by the organ that the stoma helps function even in difficult conditions. Therefore, without further ado, here are the five main stoma types:
- Colostomy: the most common of the stoma types, it represents an opening in the lower abdomen that helps the colon to eliminate wastes without passing through the anus.
- Ileostomy: an opening in the middle of the abdomen that allows the small intestine to function properly, while by - passing the colon and the anus.
- Urostomy: this stoma type connects the urinary tract to the abdominal wall. Men are more predisposed then women to need a urostomy at some point in their life.
- Jejunostomy: there is something special about jejunostomy, more specifically it is not only used to eliminate wastes, but also to feed a person that is unable to swallow.
- Gastronomy: no, it has nothing to do with preparing the food. This one allows the patient to be fed artificially, directing the food to the stomach. The difference between the last two is their placement on the digestive tract. The gastronomy is placed higher then the jejunostomy.
