Stoma Repair |
||
Stoma repairEveryone knows that, in some cases, a stoma repair is necessary. Usually, physicians tend to advise against modifying anything about such a risky procedure, like creating a stoma, but, sometimes, the stoma repair is unavoidable. For example, if the patient suffers some sort of traumatism to the abdomen, then the stoma will have to be repaired somehow, since it most surely will not stay in place. The worst fear of all surgeons and their patients is a hernia. Basically, the muscles that surround the opening of the abdomen loosen over time and the intestine tends to fall through the enlarged stoma. This is not a good thing. When this happens, a stoma repair is the only way to go. Also, if the patient looses a lot of weight or gains a lot of weight, the original position of the stoma will change. In the case of weight loss, the excess of skin will weigh down the stoma pouch and will pull it in every direction imaginable as the person walks. For this type of patient, two types of surgery must be performed: first, the excess of skin must be removed. Only after this procedure is successful can the stoma repair truly begin. When patients gain too much weight, their entire stoma pouch could be swallowed by the fatty tissue. The only solution that will last is that the patient is put immediately on a diet. And that they stick to it. |
