Stoma Reduction |

Stoma reductionA stoma reduction surgical procedure can have two motives to back it up. For one, the patient will agree to a stoma reduction for aesthetical purposes. Essentially, this means that the person will undergo another surgery just to shrink the size of their stoma. Not many surgeons will agree to do this type of surgery, but those that do are supposed to inform their patients of the following two things: if the stoma reduction is not motivated by something medical, then it will not be free. This seems to convince most people to not try it. However, if the patient insists, the second reason might be more persuasive: if the stoma reduction is performed too early, then it might hurt the intestine. This is not a good thing, just to be clear. In the end, the stoma might look better, but the patient's intestine will be in a bad shape. The second reason as to why a stoma reduction is performed is medical: once the swelling in the intestine goes down, the initial stoma pouch could be a tad too big for the actual opening in the abdomen. This means that there exists a great chance for the wastes, be them liquid or semi - solid, to escape the confines of the pouch and touch the skin of the abdomen, leading to all sorts of complications, including the appearance of a stoma rash or even a stoma excoriation. |
