Stoma quality of life

One of the most important things that a patient fears when they hear about a stoma surgery is the wrongly - perceived low stoma quality of life. The idea that the stoma quality of live is on the bottom end of the spectrum stems from some truth, but those problems have been long since surpassed. For example, one of the most gruesome things that have affected the post - stoma quality of life for some past patients has been the smell. While this has been and issue in the 1970s' and the 1980s', when the stomas where made strictly out of some sort of polyester, it is not a problem anymore.

Nowadays, stoma manufacturers have developed new and improved materials for the stoma pouch, making it almost odorless. Recent studies show that the simple lack of smell makes some patients state their post - stoma quality of life has improved greatly.

Another aspect that can affect the life - quality of stoma patients is the leakage. Too large or too small stoma pouches can cause wounds and leakage of the wastes contained within the pouch. This is never a good thing, since those liquids can hurt the surrounding skin and smell badly. However, surgeons nowadays have become very skilled at gauging the correct dimensions of a stoma pouch and at avoiding all stoma life quality problems. If the patient experiences some issues with their pouch, they should contact their attending physician immediately and a proper solution will be offered to them.
