Stoma Enema |
||
Stoma enemaAfter one learns what a stoma is used for and what kind of diseases it can cure, the following question must be: how does it work? Well, basically, the patient must give himself or herself a daily stoma enema. How is a stoma enema different from a normal enema? Well, firstly, it is not an ultimate resort in case of extreme bowel blockage. Stoma enemas are, basically, the way this type of surgical procedure works. See, if the anus is compromised and another gateway for wastes is created, then those wastes must be eliminated somehow. They will not disappear on their own, they have to be stored in the stoma pouch and then disposed of. This is where the stoma enema comes in. Usually, after a couple of meals, the stoma patient feels the pouch getting heavier and heavier. With the help of some rather specialized equipment, including a syringe and some fancy tubing, the outer pouch is removed and the fecal matter is pulled out from the inner pouch. It is replaced with some washing liquid, which is later eliminated through the same means. A patient must be advised to not try this at home for the first time, but to be shown all its steps by a professional. Also, the first few times when a stoma enema is performed, the sufferer should be accompanied by another person, just to make sure that nothing goes wrong. |
