Urostomy is a stoma made in those dreadful cases where drainage of urine through the bladder and urethra is not possible. It is a stoma for the urinary system.

The reasons for the need of such a surgery can be :
• bladder cancer
• neurologic dysfunction
• birth defects
• chronic inflammation of bladder

You can return to your job in two or three months after you had your stoma surgery. This depends on your general health. If you feel like working and of course healthy just do it go to job. You will feel good meeting with your mates. Be advised that it is not recommended though to lift heavy weights it your job implies that.

If you want to go enjoy sport do be careful with your stoma. Check and replace your fluids and develop your fits gradually. If you are the type to enjoy contact sports be very careful to your stoma and wear a stoma guard to protect it. If you like swimming try wearing a smaller appliance to your stoma, because this is more discrete. You’ll feel better.

First have in mind that a doctor and a nurse will guide you though this whole process and you are not alone in this so be confident and all will be all right in the end.

Ileostomy is a stoma constructed by bringing the small intestine( ileum) to the surface of the skin. This way, the waste is collected in a pouch on the abdomen. This kind of stoma is situated on the right side of the abdomen. When an injury occurs on the large intestine and the colon is removed an ileostomy is vitally necessary. Diseases which need surgical removal include „Crohn’s disease” , „Ulcerative colitis” , „Familial adenomatous polyposis” etc. Ileostomy sometimes is necessary in colorectal cancer treatment . A temporary ileostomy is necessary when a tumor blocks the colon. A loop of intestines are brought out through a stoma and the colon and rectum will be removed. This kind of stoma are often the first step in reconstruction of an ileo-anal pouch. This can last up to 11 weeks.

How one lives with an ileostomy

They need an ostomy pouch that collects all intestinal waste. This is a dreinable pouch that is leakproffed at the bottom and it can be used to get rid of the waste any time. It is clearly better that a permanent pouch that needs to be replaced when it gets full. This kind of stoma implies that the pouch will be emptied 4-5 time a day, everyday. So simply it can be used whenever they find themselves near a bathroom. Every 3-6 days the pouch will become deteriorated and needs to be changed and it is rather hard to notice when worn under the clothes, unless it gets too full.

To minimize your problems or a potential blockage one should chew the food very very good in order to help with the digestion process. Also some foods are not recommended like potatoes and some raw vegetables because they are harder to digest.

Alternatives

There is an alternative that needs no external pouch (because that can be for some very unpleasant) named ileo-anal pouch. An internal reservoir is connected to the anus made from the ileum after removing the colon and rectum. So there is no need for external „devices”.

Urostomy

The 4 most commonly reasons when one needs a urostomy:

  1. bladder cancer
  2. neurological dysfunction of the bladder (the bladder doesn’t work as it should)
  3. birth defects
  4. chronic inflammation of the bladder

The urostomy is another form of stoma. It is used for the urinary system. When there are problems with the bladder or the urethra and urinating can not be done by natural ways there is need of a urestomy. The process is rather similar to the Ileostomy. An artificial bladder is made of a bowl that can be emptied whenever it is necessary. This process is not that complicated as an ileostomy and it is simply a procedure to detour urine away from the problem and the organs which suffered surgical procedures and need time to heal. Sometimes the bladder is removed making the urine pass through the stoma to get outside of the body. The surgery that is done to extract and get rid of the sickened bladder is named CYSTECTOMY.

Stoma and Stomata - what they mean

I too was very scared when my doctor said „You, dear sir need a stoma surgery ” …. YES my heart started being like hell. And believe me I’m not that easy to scare. But soon I realized that this came from the fact that I just didn’t know what that meant, so I started my research on that.

I must tell you by now that stoma refers to a small hole or opening which got the name from the stomata in botany. If you are interested in the surgical or medical stoma please bare with me a little as i will talk about it in my next post. Now I’ll just try to offer to you as many details I’ve come to know about stomata, where the name came from and other aspects I found interesting in my research.

Stoma (or stomate, pl “stomata”) is a small opening that helps plants make their gas exchange. Plants breath in CO2( carbon dioxide) and breaths out O2 (oxigen ) and that’s why they are so important because they help to keep the air clean and us humans healthy. This gas exchange is needed for the process of photosynthesis. There is another role of these pores called stomata: through them the plant releases water in water vapors. This process is called transpiration.

Another interesting fact is that stomata can be found on both sides of the leaf. Dicotyledons plants have stomata on the lower epidermis and monocotyledons on the upper epidermis. More interesting is that on plants that have submerged leaves stoma is missing and on floating leaves stomata are present only on the upper side. Also there are plants that open their stomata only at night and plants that open stomata at day, excited by factors like carbon dioxide concentration, light and of course, humidity. I’ve read somewhere that scientists

even don’t know for sure how this mechanism surely and clearly works, they just found out what factors stomata reacts to.

Stomata is in fact a very reliable and “safe” working mechanism. It was discovered that stomata can react to pathogens and close itself without letting them in and getting the plants sick. Doctors and scientists, as they usually do, find very reliable working mechanisms in nature and duplicate them in the interest of curing diseases.

STOMA reacts to pathogens preventing them from sickening the plans, it being a very small hole which permits change of gases or different fluids safely. So they copied these small but “smart” nature schematics to make a stoma which then is used in curing some very unhappy patients LIKE I WAS.
